Replacing Hydrogen Peroxide with UV Technology in Dairy Packaging Disinfection

UVL is a full-cycle manufacturer of ultraviolet disinfection equipment. We don’t just produce UV irradiators, but also develop our own amalgam lamps to match. This in-house capability allows us to tailor custom solutions for even the most complex production environments. One such case involved transitioning from chemical disinfection to UV-based sterilization at a dairy processing facility.

The Challenge

At one of the country’s major dairy plants, hydrogen peroxide had long been used to disinfect plastic cups and lids before filling. While effective, the method had several growing drawbacks: rising chemical costs, unstable deliveries, and increasingly time-consuming maintenance procedures. The plant needed an alternative that could maintain hygiene standards, while simplifying the process and reducing reliance on consumables.

The UV Solution

Following an on-site technical review, our team proposed a switch to UV disinfection using the Sterilizing UV conveyor system unit. This germicidal UV lamp system was specifically designed for conveyor lines and provides targeted exposure to packaging surfaces without contact or chemicals.

The core advantage of UV sterilizing lamps lies in their speed and efficiency. The system instantly eliminates surface microorganisms without altering production layouts, adding chemical costs, or risking supply interruptions.

Equipment Specifications

The sterilizing UV conveyor system is optimized for integration into food processing conveyor lines. At the customer's request, we delivered a shatterproof version to meet strict food safety standards.

Key features:

  • Power Output: up to 64 W per amalgam UV lamp
  • Lamp Type: ozone-free UVC lamps
  • Housing: made of food-grade stainless steel
  • Mounting Height: 15–20 cm above the conveyor via brackets or custom supports

To ensure seamless operation, we also included electronic control cabinets, providing reliable power management and protection for the UV system.

Implementation

Our engineers customized the irradiators to fit the exact dimensions and speed of the packaging line. The UV disinfection lamps were mounted at a precise height of 15–20 cm, ensuring maximum exposure. Control panels were installed simultaneously to manage lamp performance and enhance safety.

The full package — including control systems — was supplied at a cost of approximately 130,300 RUB (including VAT). Installation was completed with no production delays, and the system went live immediately on one of the operating lines.

Results

Switching from hydrogen peroxide to UV disinfection enabled the facility to:

  • Lower operating costs
  • Eliminate reliance on chemical supplies
  • Streamline the sterilization process

Equally important was our flexibility as a manufacturer. We didn’t just sell the equipment — we adapted it to fit the client’s specific space, performance, and hygiene needs. In conveyor-based environments, where every millimeter matters, this attention to detail is essential.
